Max Tepfer

President

Max Tepfer has called Central Oregon home since 2012 after relocating from Eugene and has spent his entire adult life climbing rocks in the area. He’s worked as a mountain guide at Smith and in various mountain ranges for over a decade and has established and repeated numerous rock climbs throughout the region. When he's not climbing for fun or work, Max enjoys updating old fixed hardware. His proudest accomplishment in life is helping make the HDCA's rebolting program the thriving reality that it is today.

Stephen Gladieux

Lead Instructor, Re-Bolting Project Leader

Stephen Gladieux has been climbing since the mid 90’s. His love of sharing vertical spaces with friends has taken him across the globe from Frozen waterfalls in Canada to humid hollers in Kentucky, from deep caves in China to the beaches of Thailand, from the French Alps to the Blue Mountains of Australia. He’s been a professional guide, and a materials scientist – these things combined with his passion for climbing and drew him into FAs and rebolting. Summers saw rebolting in Canada, then seasons rebolting in Tonsai, working with the Thaitanium project.

Stephen currently represents the US on the UIAA Safety Commission where he revises climbing equipment safety standard (including on fixed hardware) and works on failure analysis globally. He has spent years studying corrosion and developing novel alloys and heat treatments. He’s lectured on stress corrosion cracking at universities, and climbing or caving conferences. He is a passionate caver as well as a climber and is a director on the governing board of the National Speleological Society. A member of the HDCA board since 2020, he currently leads the re-bolting project at Smith Rock and is our lead re-bolting clinic instructor.

You can find Steve ripping skins on an Oregon summit or hanging at Redpoint after a day of climbing.

Tyler Swanson

Vice President

Tyler Swanson is an AMGA certified Single Pitch Instructor, and has had a lifelong passion for adventure. When he was introduced to rock climbing in 2015 it was immediately obvious that this would be a lifelong passion. Climbing has since been a catalyst to explore multiple destinations across the country and forged some of his strongest, most treasured relationships.

Building, creating and tinkering have also been a through-line in Tyler’s life. These two worlds collided when he attended one of the HDCA’s autumn re-bolting clinics. Re-bolting at Smith Rock eventually led to him taking the role of a sitting HDCA board member in 2021, then a re-bolting leader and eventually HDCA Vice President.

Tyler Gates

Treasurer

Tyler Gates, East Coast born and raised, spent 10 years climbing around the West before settling in Central Oregon 4 years ago. Tyler enjoys taking ropes for long walks in the mountains and endless pitches of moderate climbing.  After benefitting from so many other volunteers’ hard work developing and maintaining climbing areas around the country, he’s excited to help support his now local crags any way that he can.

Adriana Boylan

Secretary

Adriana Boylan is on a mission to make climbers—especially women and youth—the most powerful advocates they can be. She encourages more women to get involved in central Oregon’s rebolting community through education and volunteer efforts. She also founded the Cascades Academy Climbing Club at the middle school where she teaches. Adri is the recipient of the 2022 Access Fund Climbing Advocates Award and is an inspiring leader in the central Oregon climbing community and a role model for climbing advocates everywhere.

Anna Casady

Re-Bolting Team Leader

Anna Casady has been living in Oregon for 6 years. Central Oregon and the high desert are places that Anna has loved from the beginning and she’s now so excited to have the chance to give back to these beautiful places. Climbing has been a big part of Anna’s life since she was a teenager and she’s so happy to be a part of this community.

Additionally, TC actively fosters collaborative efforts by establishing strong connections with external entities like the Deschutes Trails Coalition, Black Diamond, and the Forest Service.

Rachel Greenwald Rhoads

Outreach Coordinator

Rachel Greenwald Rhoads grew up in Los Angeles thinking she wanted to be an actress, following along with many around her…. However, her high school had an outdoor education program which required 3 trips prior to graduation; she opted for a Joshua Tree climbing trip with friends thinking it would be an easy, fun time with her friends. She had not expected to fall in love with the movement, physicality, and mental challenge of climbing. She was hooked! And as a young woman growing up in LA, she finally found a place and community she fit in with. She went on to travel all over the world to climb and immerse herself in other cultures.

She currently lives in Bend, Oregon, works as a residential and commercial realtor, loves giving back to the community and spending as much time outside as possible, when not working. She wants to do all she can to help educate people to the environmental, social, and economic importance of keeping our natural areas natural. She is also on the board of Bend Endurance Academy, another local non profit aiming to empower youth through biking, climbing, and x-country skiing, all lifestyle sports. She continues to travel the world for any mountain outdoor adventure.
